What Should be the Title to The Sequel to Wikinomics?

Dear Friends of Wikinomics.

We are just finishing the manuscript of a new book.  The basic idea is that the principles of Wikinomics, the new Web and mass collaboration provide the keys to transforming more than the corporation (that’s what Wikinomics was about). Rather we can reinvent and rebuild just about every institution in society for an age of networked intelligence. Many of the organizations and institutions that have served us well for decades, even centuries, are stalled. The pillars of economic and social life that grew from the industrial economy have come to the end of their life cycle.

The financial services industry for example needs more than a fresh infusion of capital or some new regulations; it needs a whole new operating model — one based on integrity, transparency, and the sharing of intellectual property. Meanwhile the epitome of the industrial economy, the American auto industry has collapsed and evidently lacks the vision to move towards more sustainable and intelligent forms of personal transport. As companies in other sectors cut their costs to stay alive, many began to see that hunkering down, while necessary was insufficient for success. From manufacturing to retail smart managers have begun to initiate long over due changes to their structures and strategies.

The upheaval is now spreading to other sectors — from the universities and science, to entertainment and media, to government and democracy. The recent collapse of many newspapers is a storm warning of more to come. There is a growing appreciation that conventional wisdom isn’t going to cut it for success in this century.

There is no more important challenge than creating a green energy grid and reindustrializing the planet for sustainability. And thanks to the new web, for the first time in human history the peoples of the world are building a global movement — where everyone is on the same side.

So while the burning platform of the global economy is propelling change there are simultaneously new opportunities to marshal the collective ingenuity of society to solve problems on a time-scale that matters. The book argues that old notions of command and control leadership are giving way to new models of decentralized leadership and collective action. To achieve the goals of wealth creation, social development, justice, freedom and sustainability, we need to reinvent our institutions around a new set of design criteria for the 21st Century, including: Innovation, Collaboration, Self Organization, Transparency, Sharing, Interdependence and Integrity.

There are a number of initial title ideas below.  We’re looking for a title that informs readers what the book is about and is memorable.  Please respond as follows:

  • Sorry to say, but I wouldn't pick up any of the above books - they sound like just more 2008 blahblah wishful thinking about this bright new post-hierarchical world where the authors aren't out there scrapping for a living.

    So IF the book is about (I hope it is) how two years ago we could say we = the masses = collaboration and that's super, now we can say we = worn out masses because the party got too big and sloppy and globby = getting somewhere but inefficiently, THEN we need some new ground rules. Starting point: collaboration on a more human scale that makes Innovation, Collaboration, Self Organization, Transparency, Sharing, Interdependence and Integrity manageable. Suggested title: We, the mini-masses.

I think I was one of the first to state that it was a good idea and I did so in a response to one of your comments that came before Eryc's in this thread so that's why it may have looked like I was the first to mention it (plus, I used it in subsequent suggestions when the subtitle was being discussed). I wish I did!

    Great idea Eryc and great overall title for the book. I can't wait until this one comes out. A book concept like this is really needed now, especially after the latest Supreme Court decision that will further reduce the power of citizens to make a difference (in the US at least).

  • Having found 'Wikinomics' to be a pretty transformative read in terms in my perceptions of the changes going on in the world around us and where I fit into it all, I'm delighted to play a tiny part in the follow up title (by adding a comment here).

    Liking most of the selections above. Don, your choice of 'MACROWIKINOMICS: Rebooting Business and Society' is good, although I think that Macrowikinomics is a slightly unwieldy word in a reductivist age where things get shorter rather than longer!

    Personally in favour of some form of 'Wikinomics Manifesto' finding its way into the pages - it's a bold statement saying 'this is the way forward'.

  • Guess 'Manifesto' does sound a little 19th Century! Well, every era had ideas that get recycled when the time is right. Perhaps the old publishing industry's still not going to go for a manifesto through.

    So many alternatives, each with their own +'s and -'s. 'Paradigm's not inclusive enough a term, yet represents the shift needed. 'Manifesto's too Marxist for a business publishing imprint. 'Guidebook's soft and palatable enough, yet not too appropriate when talking about something that needs to be done rather than what has already been done...

    One of the challenges, Don, about crowdsourcing suggestions is that it must get mighty difficult to make choices when you have that many more choices available! Well done on making one anyway.

    I don’t like idea with MACRO – looks like poor excuse for scientific term and is boooring (sorry).

    1-2: too generalized and abstract
    3-16 and 19-20: now we live in turbulent times and have too much “news”, “revolutions”, “rebuildings” etc. It may be considered as smth. negative as people are tired of changes (which are negative so far). Exception is Reboot(ing).
    17-18: not clear, too abstract
    21: OK
    22-24: OK but a bit complicated
    25: too abstract and high-flown

  • I also like Macrowikinomics, especially if you want to stick with the Wiki theme to create linkage with your previous book. Of all the Wiki titles thrown around on this page, this is the best.

    The subtitle is decent, but I keep going back and forth over the idea of "rebooting" and the duplicity of it being simple and common enough of a term to make people understand the premise of the book, vs. it being outdated and technically not correct with regards to what the book is promoting.

    In today's NY Times, Thomas Friedman's Op Ed had this paragraph:
    "John Hagel, the noted business writer and management consultant argues in his recently released “Shift Index” that we’re in the midst of “The Big Shift.” We are shifting from a world where the key source of strategic advantage was in protecting and extracting value from a given set of knowledge stocks — the sum total of what we know at any point in time, which is now depreciating at an accelerating pace — into a world in which the focus of value creation is effective participation in knowledge flows, which are constantly being renewed."

    The idea of Knowledge Flows caught my attention and seemed appropriate for your concept (or "Knowledge Streams" since the term "Lifestreaming" is now becoming popular as an alternative to blogging). So how about:

    Macrowikinomics: Harnessing Knowledge Streams to Reinvent Business and the World

    Macrowikinomics: Harnessing Knowledge Streams to Create a New Paradigm for Business and the World

    Macrowikinomics: How society can prosper in the era of Knowledge Flow

    ...or so many other ways the subtitle can be said.

    Also, one more completely different idea. I was thinking of Isaac Asimov's Foundation series and it's premise of capturing the entire knowledge of mankind in order to rebuild civilization after a predicted period of a Dark Age, and how there was some similarity, so:

    New Foundation: Harnessing our Collective Knowledge to Build Better Businesses and Institutions for the 21st Century ...........(or just ...to Build a Better 21st Century)

  • i like the simplicity of the MACROWIKINOMICS concept on a number of levels (although i have to admit the term takes a couple of attempts to say:) perhaps it's me!). The support line also captures the essence of the book proposition ... looks great!

  • Please stay away from "Darwinism" - you would be attracting a flock of lunatic flying monkeys who are trying to destroy science education in the US to all online discussions of your content. That way lies madness.

    Also as with the New Deal language - adding a left/right frame that is unnecessary...and probably harmful.

    As fun as the word 'manifesto' it has been overused grievously in the last 10 years, and mostly by people who would never go near a barricade. I really think Ted Kozinski took all the fun out of that one.

    I do like Co-Creating the Future - but I would suggest we are all always co-creating the future with every choice we make including the choice to be a couch potato. So I would add something to that which makes clear the catalytic nature of these new tools....

    The term 'reboot' is pretty cheesy and very 1990's. I would have thought something that stresses a new synthesis in the technium thus removing hierarchies embedded from feudalism and placing greater emphasis on the 'human herd'. Maybe something that centres around the concept of 'Digital Darminism'?

    2. Suggestion:
    "the Global Remix"
    - I like the suggestion right off the bat that what we're looking at is a new methodology
    to better create systems that support us, and that it is this "remixing" that has allowed us to address the complexity of our time. Remix includes approaches such as: co-creation, collaboration, mash-up, multi-discipline, re-purposing or scaling and insists on values of the social web such as openness, authenticity & transparency.

    3. rifting off of other suggestions:
    "Reboot:" A global upgrade for the 21stC" or condensed: "Reboot: the global upgrade," "The Global Reboot"

    4. general comments:
    - although I like Networked Intelligence and think it'll be a strong component in the book, I caution against using it in the title, since I think it alienates many people up front.
    - words like "new" and "future" seem to date themselves right out of the gate. 21stC, although more academic sounding, better encapsulates the "new paradigm" as it will be discussed in the book

    I love the Remix idea. But Larry Lessig has a book out by that title... good book to0... cites Wikinomics multiple times.

    I hear you about Networked Intelligence. But is there a better term to describe the new age? Knowledge age (zzz). Age of Participation is trite. Digital Age? -- that's been done. Really struggling with this one.

  • I've had a concept percolating for some years – "WeBeDo" – that may be useful in relation to my recent comments on the need for new words/languages for enabling new conversations. It has emerged through my research into what new thinking and ways of practicing are required in the future – to embrace and reflect on ‘how’ we think instead of purely ‘what’ we think?

    "WeBeDo" = pure co-creative thinking and acting. I'll resist defining further as its useful for others to respond without me providing a guiding/explanatory hand (as per the bookshelf).

    Rob, and everybody else,
    What got me hooked the first time I noticed Don's and Antony's new book project was their conclusion (which I also reached a few years ago ;) "we can reinvent and rebuild just about every institution in society for an age of networked intelligence". THIS insight is what is (relativerly) novel. And I preferr to say "we should..." (not can).

    All the other things (networked intelligence, communications revolution, participiation, co-creation, conversation, citizien generated content, wikis, augmented reality, etc) are generally, if maybe not fully understood at least recognized by the potential "readers" (which is an obsolete word ;)

    Of course it's up to the authors, but there is a difference between "the world" and it's "societies". If my understanding of the book project is correct, the title word that replace "wikinomics" must this time clearly indicate that it is about "institutions in society". Furthermore, this word will be more valuable if it's unique (good with Google), memorable, and intriguing. Rebuilding, reinventing, participation, rebooting, etc does not do it. In Rob's words, will not create "jump off the bookshelf".

    In a similar fasthion neither "connected" nor "networked" (intelligence) directly points to the state mankind has reached. Books, as well as Television, connected us in relatively slow networks. But "online" (real time interaction) makes a difference.

    Perhaps lame, but "Relightenment" is still the best I can come up with. So I still stick with:

    RELIGHTENMENT: mankind has gone online - welcome to the business of revolutionizing society!

    And I agree, it is a fun - and mind shaping excercise. Thanks to us all!

    p.s. Just realized that "Real Time" (which is a really hot concept) has not appeared in the disqussion. Even so, I skip it because the changes we are about to do will take some time. Real time is just a driver and enabler. d.s.

    We need to make it a norm to be tech savvy and engaged in civic and community matters. It needs to be the NORM, not just for those INTERESTED in it.
    The platforms are built, the tools are available how do we make it more attractive for more people to integrate it into their lives in order to enrich their lives? From the list, I like the title: The Age of Participation because it's inclusive, speaks to a new age where we must participate not out of obligation but because it's good for us.

    -Wikinomics 2.0: The/A Social Webolution
    ("WEBOLUTION" is a combination Revolution (signifying a new revolution post the i.e. industrialized revolution) + the Web - since we use "web" in so many words today that are used in mass collaboration like "webex" and "webinar" etc...)

    -Webolution: The Age of Networked Intelligence

    -e-VOLUTION...

    -Webopia...

    Here is the "Age of Networked Intelligence" idea. Basically we're shifting from the industrial age to a new age. But what to call it? Kwowledge Age? (zzz) Age of Participation? ...hm.

    This is much better:

    Printing gave humanity the written word, and today’s technology revolution continues this process. People everywhere now have access to myriad forms of recorded information travelling at the speed of light.

    But today’s revolution is profoundly different. While printing gave humanity the chance to read the written word, the web makes everyone a publisher. This is giving us new access to the knowledge contained in the crania of our fellow humans, on a global scale. It’s an entirely new step in our communications evolution. Printing enabled the distribution of knowledge. The web enables the distribution of intelligence. Printing enabled people to know. The web enables people to collaborate and to learn collectively.
    This is the age of networked intelligence, as people begin to work collaboratively in radically new ways.

    The effect on all our institutions is incalculable. But through the haze and all the turmoil, the contours of fresh new forms of human organization, as revolutionary as those of centuries ago, are beginning to reveal themselves.
  • I keep asking myself if these titles (including my own contributions on this page) will jump off the bookshelf the way Wikinomics did and I keep answering no.

    Networked Intelligence just doesn’t have that Wikinomics ring to it. I think it might turn off too many people, sound too technical.

    Besides, what are we trying to imply when we say networked intelligence? We’re talking about the ubiquitous availability of knowledge – whether people turn that into intelligence or not is up to them so maybe it's misleading as a title. But I agree that the Age of Knowledge has no pizazz for a title. How can you spruce up ‘knowledge’ for the title?

    Also, if we’re looking at this from an “Age” perspective, ask yourself how will historians look back on this period. If before us was the Industrial Revolution then surely now is the Communications Revolution (I think even more so than an information revolution). Instant connectivity to anyone in the world and the ability to expand that into networks of connectivity is how we’re tapping into all this knowledge, but whether it’s the phone or the net it’s still communications. So how about:

    Hyper-Knowledge!
    How the Age of Connectivity will Revolutionize our Institutions and Businesses
    or
    How the Communications Revolution is Ushering in an Age of Empowerment (...will Reshape Society...or Reshape our Institutions and Business)

    or simply

    Hyper-Knowledge!

    Plus, on the other most popular idea on this blog – “Reboot” – I have a similar feeling. There are many books already out there with that phrase. While we can argue all day whether it’s usage is correct or not (technically it’s not since rebooting brings back up the same operating system that crashed before, which we DON”T want to do, even though most people will get the general gist of what it's about) I just think it’s just not original enough for the author of such a great title like Wikinomics.
  • Rob makes an important point when he says "Networked Intelligence just doesn’t have that Wikinomics ring to it" ... this is important and shouldn't (in my opinion) be rushed.

    "how competition will no longer be enough in the future and why there will be a need to shift to sur/petition. The word competition means ‘seeking together.’ This means accepting that you are running in the same race as your competitors. Your behaviour is quite largely determined by the behaviour of the competitors. Sur/petition means “seeking above” or creating your own race." (de Bono).

    Damn, one probably wants to put everything that's in the book, in the title :-) We simply can't. Luckily we have the book behind the title in which we can access all these great concepts!

    Centuries ago, would you have called a book something like "The Age of Distributed Knowledge"? I don't think so (but I must admit right now I don't know how to call a book about such a movement back then).

    On the front of the book it might be great to add a short explanation introducing the concept of the Age of Networked Intelligence. The title itself, in my view, should be more catchy and should invite potential readers to join you on this great journey. That's why I coined "TurningPoint". This is about going somewhere new and has the potential of gaining a "trademark value" similar to Wikinomics.

    REBOOTING THE WORLD: For the Age of Networked Intelligence

    Three Reasons:

    1) Reboot is a universally understood concept. We've all rebooted a computer, taken a vacation to 'reboot' our lives, and started a task over with a totally different approach as part of a reboot. It is also the most popular concept on this blog.
    2) Feature 'networked intelligence' coined in 1995 by Don- an idea whose time has perhaps finally come. This is significant, as every one of Don's book titles have either created or popularized a concept 'Paradigm Shift' 'Digital Economy' 'Naked Corporation' and most recently with Anthony Williams- 'Wikinomics.' Nothing more powerful than neologisms...anyone heard of Freakanomics? Also- Reboot has potential to become a major buzzword.
    3) It is concise and serious, without sounding too dry. My primary issue with all of these "How we can change the world," and "You are going to revolutionize the economy" is, quite simply, that they don't sound serious. On the flip side, a "New operating system for the 21st century" is very dry and the notion of an OS runs the risk of being totally foreign to many people. This title hits the right chord in the middle.

    Alex, it is exactly the popularity of "Reboot" that turns me off - YABORS (Yet Another Book On Rebooting Something ;). And I am afraid that "Networked intelligence" has become equally popular/buzzy over the years. Furthermore, rebooting is just starting fresh, with the old OS (institutions). Hence, "Upgrading the world" or "Upgrading society" might be better.

    "Wikinomocis" is great, because it is unique and an exremely good mashup of two strong concepts. I like "Re", and we like the profoundness of whats going on, at least with many references here to the Renaissance.

    So, after re-reading your (appearantly most popular :) suggestion, Don's explanation about Networked intelligence, and Mark's "Welcome" I came up with another "tweak":

    Giving "reboot" a second thought I come to think it is missing the point. Reboot is about throwing everything away and start all over again without learning from the past. What we talking about here is building upon everything that has been accomplished in the past and going into a new direction.

    A similar issue I have with "re-industializing". Industrializing the world has been done and has been done right. It gives us a sound base camp from which to move on. Now is the time to explore a new direction and that is what the book is about.

    Therefore I propose:

    "TurningPoint - Towards a New Operating Paradigm for Business and the World"

    TurningPoint suggests moving into a new direction. And in order to stay away from a 180 degrees turn (which means walking back), the "Towards a New ..." should be added.

This topic probably warrants a chapter in your book as its the biggest challenge facing mass collaboration and innovation in the "new age."

    It seems everything I hear is a comparison of what is happening now, to what happened before. The current economic recession comparaed to the Great Depression. Swine Flu compared to the Flu of the early 1900's. Even songs or raps seem to be remakes fo something already done.

    When you use the word "reinventing" that means it was tried once, so now you have to try something again.

    How about "Everything New is Old Again" to paraphrase a quote.

  • How about "We are the new world"? The advantage - it's about us vs. an observative title. I called my blog and planned book "Icentered - The web according to me" since it's about a paradigm shift that empowers a web where I, the user, am at the center, with the wheel in my hands, proactively creating pacts and food chains around me. I chose his titles to give the feeling of "in medias res" and not talking about - reinforcing a sense of belonging, bondingwith the message, participation and involvement.

  • Ok, one more. Don, you floated the idea of using "Renaissance" in the title out there earlier and most of us liked it, including me. However, thinking about it again while the Renaissance was a slow revival of art and science, meaning a return to what had been lost through the Dark Ages, it was the following Age of Enlightenment that truly transformed the world to more modern times.

    The Enlightenment is described as "characterized by belief in the power of human reason and by innovations in political, religious, and educational doctrine" (substitute institutions for doctrine). One of the primary elements of the Enlightenment was the rise of the public sphere, meaning the fostering of conditions necessary for “rational, critical, and genuinely open discussion of public issues” for Enlightenment ideas to be spread and discussed (paraphrased from Wikipedia). While some of this was achieved, it never fully realized it's potential but we now have the tools to do so.

    This is much more fitting than the Renaissance. With that thought:

You provide the light. We all need to act. And the reasons as well as drivers are explained in the book (I assume ;).

    I like Wikiworld as it's the grown up brother to Wikinomics which focuses on one aspect (the business/economic) of the digital revolution.

    Networked Intelligance has now infiltrated every aspect of our life and world and therefore Wikiworld is appropriate. The term also leverages on your previous success. It builds on the Wiki brand you have created.

    What comes next? 'WikiLife', WikiSapien'...

  • I haven't read your new book, obviously. But I have my view on where the new order should bring us. It is about new economics where relationship value becomes key. Sustainability, green, etc. are utterly important. But that will only happen if the values and inner workings of the new order support it automatically. The focus (and the name) should be on the new order and not on the result of it.

    Open Source(d) is part of the new enabling paradigm, same goes for Wiki. "Social" is the overall term. Integrity, trust, etc. comes with it.

    Companies, but also governments, social groups, etc. are part of and build the economic system. Economics still works ars a term here.

    Could "Socionomics" work?

    Or: "Socionomics - The age of networked intelligence"

    Hi Don,

    I understand your reluctance to use the term "Wiki" but I have to say that you shouldn't overlook the power of the brand/name in the marketplace. It would undoubtedly assist with sales of your new book. So I was thinking of something like "Wiki The World" or a variant of that ("Wikiworld" isn't bad - but using "Wiki" as a verb sounds more active and in line with what your book is about).

    I have a strong aversion to a number of buzz-words that have been out there and beaten to death: Reinvention, Manifesto, Networked. And some of the titles you've listed are very close to books that have already been published ("The Age of the Network" by the folks at NetAge - published in 1994!).

    I assume you chose the word "wiki" as part of the title for the first book because wikis are typically powered by wiki software and are often used to create collaborative websites, to power community websites, for personal note taking, in corporate intranets, and in knowledge management systems. It would be interesting if there was another technology-oriented word that relates well to a global transformation. "Open Source" is intriguing - as in "Open-Sourcing The World" or "Open-Source the World!"

    Just a thought.

  • I like "Rebooting the 21st Century: The New Operating System for Business and the World" best, as it seems we have to redo a lot of stuff/ideas.

    On the other hand: is it really that much that is changing, viewed from a distance? Isn't it so that greed has been the major problem in the last decades (overpaid managers, greedy consumers wanting to own stuff, throwing away to much, greedy share-holders to much focused on short term gain, using up limited resources etc)?

    And now there is a growing number of people that see we need to be more responsible, for others, for the resources etc? Would something like "From the age of Greed, to the age of Green" be an option? Or "From Individual Greed to Shared Green" or something more catchy to get in the network collective thingy? "The Collective Fight Against Greed"? "Sharing to Fight Greed"?

    We had originally thought Wikiworld would be a good title but isn't the "wiki" thing done? Wikinomics is still a great term and we did invent it. But to coin a neologism containing "wiki?" Not sure that's a good idea.

    I like the term Age of Networked Intelligence as the best term to describe what comes after the Industrial Age.

    I also like the idea of Rebuilding the World, but maybe with the economy improving "rebuilding" might seem like the wrong term. then again all our institutions need to be rebuilt -- from the corporation and government, to the media, science and the transportation system.
  • Don - Is the audience for the book - business people or are you trying to make the argument that the system has opened up for innovators of all sorts and for people at all levels? Is it aimed at the technophilic or all the rest of the people who do not yet really understand how important they have become?

    So many of these titles are coming from an IT frame - and I think it goes so much beyond that. I am hacking the neighborhood. Sure tech makes it possible but the vision is decidedly analog - high touch and very human.

    Your view on the subjects is clearly far ranging enough - encompassing the wild disruptions ( need a more positive word!) across all sectors and segments... The title needs to bring people into that transformation...and not simply be #1 on the Business Best Sellers list....Or the Technology lists...

    Reinvention suggests transformation better than reboot, which is akin to reset (ie, no change), but I like reboot because it references technology as the driver of change. But can we reboot something that isn't up and running yet? Are we rebooting the first 10 years of the 21st century that have crashed because they are based on past models, or are we rebooting the world as we have known it? I think it's the world, and I really like the operating system metaphor. Did you consider other tech language, eg. reprogramming (not as edgy as rebooting)

    Platform is a too-techy word for mass take up. Building a ~... suggests its on the horizon, though its already here.
    Chapters might include analysis iof the role of eGovernment in the context of a hugely electronically enabled citizen.
    Another chapter might be on new Governmental processes, where they are enabled through an eGovernment webservice.. and the only way to go (I'll write that chapter if you like!)

    1. “Rebooting” is memorable and links to technology. Steve Papermaster is convincing about my objections to "Rebooting" as being an imperfect analogy and Bill Leigh seems to agree. John Macfarlane (editor of Walrus) likes this best too.
    2. “The 21st Century” (John Macfarlane below) has immediacy.
    3. "You are Leading" (Arjun Basu below) implies a new model of leadership that is not top down. It also explains the mass collaboration idea that is central to the book.
    4. “Renaissance” (Arjun Basu, Liz McLellan, Jourdy288, robsalk) is a wonderfully powerful and positive concept. And it was the renaissance that transitioned the world from feudal agrarian to modern industrial times).
    5. The word “Business” -- helps us relate to our core business audience...

    Ok, I'm loving "21st century", "Renaissance" and "leading", but I agree with Rob that "you are" doesn't sound right - "we are" I think is better.

    Also (again) I agree with Jason that "reboot" feels off, but it definitely has more punch than "reload" and "restart"

    Don - who is the target demographic? Is it Boomers, Gen X, Net Geners, business leaders, civilians?
    I believe that within here you'll find the answer.

    It is not grabbing me on the bookshelf because it looks like a mashup of several overused terms.
    Rebooting - I am late to the conversation, but this term feels off to me.
    From a techie perspective, "reboot" is re-initializing the OS. Your premise is quite the opposite.
    As to associations, it evokes a more dated technology framework - operating systems, personal computers, servers, operating systems ... all concepts that are increasingly sounding dated to current and future generations.
    In terms of over-use, it feels a little threadbare linking technology to social evolution.
    Leading, 21st century - 15+ years of books using these terms, which sounds conventional - again against the premise of the book.
    Renaissance - Not bad, but I think the idea is not a cultural re-awakening but a fundamental restructuring of social contribution centered more on individual relationships and less on institutional ones. I can see drawing a link to the economic and social evolution of the time, but I think that undermines the strength of the idea and message - It can stand on its own.
    Business - Fair, but how many top-selling "business" books for this audience (Freakonomics, Tipping Point, Brand Gap, etc.) use the word 'business'? Honest question as I don't know the answer.

    I think you need to stretch the title - this combination sounds a little too far back in the peloton.

  • I wasn't sold on the "rebooting" idea at first but now I think you swayed me. After looking back on the past decade and the horrible way this century has kicked off, it can sure use a reboot and the best way to do it successfully is through the principles your book will put forth.

    However, I'm not sold on the "You Are" part of the title. I understand what you're getting at but it sounds too individualistic when the premise is focused on how we can all do this together and in fact only through mass collaboration will it happen, not through any one individual effort...wasn't that why you were leaning towards having Networked Intelligence in the title.

    So what about:

    Reboot
    How Networked Intelligence will Lead a Renaissance in the 21st Century

    ....or if you want to put it more in online terms to modernize the reboot idea how about using "Reload" (preferring the Firefox term to IE's "Refresh")
  • On second thought, perhaps "Networked Intelligence" is too technical term for the casual business reader. It's really no different than Social Networking but using the power of social networks for far more ideal uses:

'Rebooting' or 'Reboot' seems to increasingly suggest what Don is aiming with the new book = beyond 'wiki'. While I initially had issues with the length of 'Rebooting the 21st Century' it's clarity is strong. Still, I believe in terms of the "bookshelf" context 'Reboot' is all that is needed as a subtitle will supports a broader explanation. Perhaps 'Reboot!' aligns closer to what's needed?

  • Ah, I just read the comments about Wiki being a bit dated. Dammit. Words still 'in', include 3.0, AR, tablet, app and social. Perhaps something around these?
  • This is such a great idea for a book. There’s so much misery and complaint in the world at the moment, so it’s refreshing to see something that focuses on a positive future, which could actually come to pass.

    With regards to the title, this is one of those situations where the answer is right at the tip of your brain, but you can’t quite get at it.

    Of the titles suggested so far, a lot of the wording is nearly there (although ‘Platform’ sounds like it’s either about gaming or about programming, while ‘Volume’ and ‘Manifesto’ sound like they might be long and arduous reads!)

    How about an amalgamation of two of your titles:
    The Wikinomics Age: Are We the Answer?

    Here’s some other suggestions….

  • There's something pragmatically usable about the title 'Wikinomics 2.0' that i like too but the purpose of the "new" book (I imagine) is to move forward ... suggest 'next' possibilities? Also using "2.0" etc is problematic and associations that could date the book too quickly. In addition, Australia recently a leading consumer food brand 'Vegemite' announcing a new name for a new variety of product – 'iSnack2.0' (http://www.upi.com/Odd_News/2009/09/30/Australi...).

    I'm still into the idea of "renaissance" - I like what it means. If You "Reboot the World: the Renaissance of ___________" what's the word? Reboot is a modern word that everyone understands. The original idea had the "wiki" or "we" (or "you") idea in it and that's kind of getting lost. So if the subtitle is "How You are leading the renaissance..." The other idea, of User's Guide, suggests a top down hierarchy that might be the wrong idea to give to people.
  • My gut feeling (as I race out the door) to the conversational thread is that 'Rebooting' or 'Reboot' is catchy as well as a universal "lived experience" (i like what Steve Papermaster said re the 'techy' implications – agree it's not big deal) for all those using technology (although i also use the term 'Restart' (not to be confused with the recent Tom Peters book title 'Re-imagine'). I could imagine verbally using this in a conversation:). I also like the notion of "co-creating" although it's unclear to how you define this term/approach ... there's a big difference between words such as co-creating, collaboration, collective creativity etc and these distinctions (and associated trajectories) need to be reflected on as well as the associated embodied knowledge strategies. 'Global momentum' also has potential and avoids rehashing existing vernacular such as 'Do it Yourself (watch as Matt Mason's 'The Pirate Dilemma' explored the DIY notion extensively a few years back), Rebuilding, "Wiki...", Networked' etc. A few title to throw to the group 'ReBoot : co-creating global movements', 'ReBoot : the co-creative imperative', 'ReBoot : co-creative action in a global context' ... OR ... 'On the move : transforming co-creative flow' (there's a nice connection to what you're suggesting with collective networks and what Csikszentmihalyi's concept of "flow" ... one question i'd ask is how much – if at all – you're targeted the book at business as this will influence the use of "creative"), 'Moving minds : Co-creating the Future' .... other words i feel are useful & appropriate are 'design' and 'leading' ...

    This is a sort of next generation paradigm shift. Sounds urgent. Doesn't rely on language that is particular to any industry. The burning platfrom is a perfect metaphor - you already use it in your talks. Now you are proposing burning the old platfroms and rebuilding new ones.

I do like the Renaissance 2.0 theme...its uplifiting, its accurate and its demonstrates the promise for the near term future.

    I think your best choice is the Rebooting idea too. It's memorable and has a gentle, sassy technology connotation. Rebooting the 21st Century. Or Rebooting the World. Come up with a good subtitle that gets you mass collaboration idea in there and you've got a great title.

  • I like the "rebooting" idea, and also talking about "platforms". I think wiki-anything is a little too narrow and maybe getting dated. Co-creating feels a bit touchy feely, but I think collaboration is a great word to invoke for the kinds of topics you're covering. Maybe something like "Rebooting [something]: Collaboration Platforms [for something]".

    Don and Anthony - I strongly suggest that number 13 or a variation of that as the book's title. I think that starting with the word "Rebooting" is unique, catchy, correct and will elicit an instantaneous connection with readers and prospective readers. "Rebooting the 21st Century" is really what you're talking about in the book anyway. It doesn't take a PC geek to understand that in any language - it just takes a user. Any ALL of your readers are users. Rebooting is what you do when everything is frozen and/or in error. The only difference is that after rebooting you don't want to run things the same way as before rebooting - but nonetheless the concept holds. When the 21st Century began, there was widespread worry about Y2K. As it turns out, 2000 - 2009 was a tumultuous and very difficult decade that's increasingly outstripped most operating models and principles - hence the need to reboot the new century while it's still early on.

    But a slight twist to incorporate your prior notion of "Paradigm Shift" might work as well vs the pure computer notion of "operating system" :

    "Rebooting the 21st Century: A New Operating Paradigm for Business and the World"

    I don't mind the Rebooting part. Although it is with us since the MS-DOS period, it is still with us and right now more accurate than ever!
  • Steve - I think that title is great, except for the word, 'rebooting'

    While 'wiki' is probably too mid-2000s, 'reboot' is too 1990s, in the same vein as 'cyber' and 'hacking'. Brings up images of MS DOS and that computer paper with the perforated edges.
    Depends on who the target demographic is, I suppose. If it's Gen X (1990s), then Reboot might work.

    'Wikiworld: How the Digital Revolution has changed everything'
    I like Wikiworld as it's the grown up brother to Wikinomics which focuses on one aspect (the business/economic) of the digital revolution.

    Networked Intelligance has now infiltrated every aspect of our life and world and therefore Wikiworld is appropriate. The term also leverages on your previous success. It builds on the Wiki brand you have created.

    What comes next? 'WikiLife', WikiSapien'...

  • Redesigning the World would combine Design Thinking (which you are talking about, I think) and the late Russ Ackoff's 'Idealized Design' (which I think you are also talking about). It's also not too techie (I agree with Liz that you should avoid terms like rebooting for that reason).
    I suppose Creation 2.0 or God 2.0 would alienate a few US readers?
    Really, I wish you'd call it "A Triarchy Press Publication"!

    I think the WE or YOU even is very important...and as much as I like the Renaissance...and think it has lovely connotations.. it's a global creative citizen phenomena. I would hate to label it in too Eurocentric a way....

    It really is not about the net but how the net is unleashing human potential...the story is that humans have found a way to do that..a means. As interesting as the means is (the net) the more amazing thing is how it is being used both as proscribed and completely 'off label' in very creative other - previously unenvisioned ways. It's perhaps a bad analogy - but previous tech was like a glass of wine for the mind...the net is like LSD. We have no idea where this will take us all...in a good way! As Gary Vaynerchuk keeps saying..."the (popular) web is only 14 years old, it's just hitting puberty!"

    The Renaissance was the story of a very small number of creatives with patronage. This time it's about people being patrons to each other - thinking in terms of crowd funding now...unleashing human altruism, foresight, community, creativity, potential to reverse harm because we can make things so visible and comprehensible...not from the top down - but from each node to each node in all directions...

  • I really like Cocreating the Future or perhaps Co-creating the Future From the Bottom Up - My sense of things is yes platforms are proliferating - and they seem to be distributing power - but are they also concentrating it. It's all so new though no way to know where this will take us in 10-20 years. Thrilling time to be alive.

    I will say the first book was fantastic! I would like to see the next one read by people other than the internet boosters and usual suspects. So the title would be very important to get it out of that circle. I tried to get folks to read the first one but most of my co-workers seemed to think it was something only for me (the IT department.)
    So my preference would be the title reflect empowerment of all levels - as opposed to further encouragement to those of us that are already in the club. Either way - I can't wait to read it!

    Wikinomics was part of the inspiration for hyperlocavore...so THANK YOU!

  • I like #21 (Co-Creating the Future) but think you should go a little further and call it "Getting Reading for the 22nd Century." Let's face it, the 21st is here but we kind of keep acting like it's still coming sometimes.
  • I like the above idea of incorporating something about "creating the future together" too. I also think that the title should imply more than just a reboot or rebuild. It's like starting with a blank slate and re-envisioning how the world's institutions and organizations could work through the principles of Wikinomics and then creating that future together (through networked intelligence or something similar that implies working together on a scale that's only possible in today's online world). Here's my offering:

My suggestion: "Social Synapse: Being Part of the Global Intelligence", although I don't know if it would introduce a term not totally proper. On the other hand, the subtitle could be more like the "Us, Not Them" idea, with something like "Upgrade for Old Institutions"

    We had originally thought Wikiworld would be a good title but isn’t the “wiki” thing done? Wikinomics is still a great term and we did invent it. But to coin a neologism containing “wiki?” Not sure that’s a good idea.

    I like the term Age of Networked Intelligence as the best term to describe what comes after the Industrial Age.

    I also like the idea of Rebuilding the World, but maybe with the economy improving “rebuilding” might seem like the wrong term. then again all our institutions need to be rebuilt — from the corporation and government, to the media, science and the transportation system.
  • The economy may seem to be improving - but it is going through a tumultuous restructuring - which will only become more so as climate change and peak (everything) have their full impacts... I think Rebuilding the World does capture the times...If people don't think that's what is happening, they aren't paying attention.

    I came across a site last night that was basically something like Startup Nation - but totally focused on tools for smart phone users in the developing world. They are not using the net the way the laptop set is...fantastic and disruptive.
